Poetry is a wonderful gift to experience and share with others. Like many forms of creativity for me poetry is about getting myself out-of-the-way so that the words can flow. I describe the process of writing poetry as a nagging feeling or hunch that there is something there waiting to be expressed. Sometimes I am awake enough to notice that feeling and reach for a piece of paper and a pen.
The poems that surface are always a surprise, coming from different parts of me able to express my feelings or my aspirations in simple and moving language. I use my poems as sources of inspiration, as something to read during difficult moments, for enjoyment and most of all to be reminded of who I really am.
I will feature a poem from my collection each week on this page more of my poetry is listed in the poetry category.
there once was a woman
so free
she made the birds feel trapped
they would watch her and wonder
what it would be like to fly
this woman
so close at any moment to being a girl
that children would flock to her
just in case
they could have a chance to play
she soared
she soaked her body in tears
she laughed so hard
the thunder felt embarrassed
and the babbling brooks
stopped to hear her chatter
she marched like a tyrant
she frolicked like a deer
she swore like a sailor
and could make love for a whole year
she had a rhythm
a motion
that all around her would stop
and look
and wonder
where where where
could this woman have come from
and how how how
does she go on
the secret she told me
was her devotion
to breathing in and knowing love
and letting go with gratitude
devotion to joy
and listening to the stories
the gods tell
in their whispering ways
God bless you, Giselle!
Peace, Uncle Tree
